Zimmer was chosen 21st overall in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians. On June 17, 2014, he agreed to a $1.9 million incentive.

He later joined the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York–Penn League’s Class A-Short Season. He ended the season with the Class A Midwest League’s Lake County Captains.

Zimmer was assigned to the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League in 2015, where he batted .305 in 77 games, with ten home runs and 32 stolen bases in 37 attempts.

Zimmer was chosen to play in the 2015 All-Star Futures Game for the Indians. Zimmer was promoted to the Akron RubberDucks of the Class AA Eastern League after the Futures Game.

Zimmer had a .219 batting average with Akron. Zimmer was sent to the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League (AFL) by the Indians, but he was diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his right foot and was ruled out of the AFL.

Zimmer began the 2016 season with the Akron Zips before being promoted to the Class AAA International League’s Columbus Clippers on July 25.

Zimmer had a .250 batting average, 15 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 38 stolen bases at the end of 2016. Zimmer was assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League after the season.
