In 2013, Doolittle pitched in 70 games for the Athletics, posting a 4-4 record, 2.71 ERA, and two saves. He struck out 60 batters while walking only 13 in 69 innings as a set-up man for Grant Balfour.

With four appearances against the Tigers in the ALDS, he returned to the postseason.

He was the loser in Game 4 on October 8th, when he came in to replace Dan Straily in the 7th inning with the A’s leading 4-3;

He gave up a home run to Victor Martinez to tie the game, then gave up a double to John Peralta, then retired the next two batters before walking José Iglesias.

With the game’s deciding run, Austin Jackson singled to right, scoring Peralta. He only gave up only two hits or runs in 4 1/3 innings during the Series, but they came at the wrong time.

When he returned to the A’s in early 2014, he received a vote of confidence from his team when he signed a five-year, $10.5 million contract on April 21st.

On June 20th, he had 48 strikeouts and only one batter walked! As the A’s new closer, he was also on a 20-inning scoreless run, retiring 51 of the last 55 batters he faced.

He was used as a pinch-hitter against Boston Red Sox reliever Koji Uehara in the 10th inning of a 7-6 loss on June 22nd, with the A’s out of position players and pitcher Fernando Abad next up;

He grounded out to end the game, but “he looked like a true hitter out there,” according to teammates. On June 28th, he squandered a 6-5 9th-inning lead against the Miami Marlins, ending a stretch of 26 2/3 innings.
